What is Flu "Season"?


Is the “flu” really a season? Do we put it on our calendars like autumn, winter, spring and summer? Based on the marketing for flu shots I’ve seen recently, you would think so! But, in fact the “FLU” is not a “SEASON”! There are no more “germs” or viruses floating around in the winter than there are in the summer. The flu “season” is created by an inability of our bodies to adapt due to decreased sun exposure and decreased water intake, combined with increased sugar intake and stress!

So let’s break that down. Yes, it is true that we see more people fighting off viruses like the flu in the fall and winter. Why is that? Our bodies cannot adapt as well to the stress of an invader due to our lowered Vitamin D (Vitamin D is a crucial component of a healthy immune system). Where do we get most of our Vitamin D? Our skin creates it for us when exposed to the sun. In the colder months, we stay indoors more often, there is less daylight, and when we do make it outside, we are typically more covered with warm clothes, hats and gloves than in warmer months.  This equation means less Vitamin D, and thus, a weakened immune system.

Another important element of a healthy immune system is HYDRATION. Water! Good old H2O, plain and simple! We need it for optimum cellular function, and that includes the cells in our bodies dedicated to finding, engulfing, and eliminating invaders such as flu viruses.

Couple that with two factors that put high stress and toxic load on both our bodies AND the entire immune system: Sugar and stress! Most people celebrate a few holidays in these fall and winter months: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day! What do all these holidays have in common? Family get-togethers, office parties, celebrations, candy, baked goods, alcoholic drinks and other sweet delicacies. Pile on top of that the stress of planning that big event, fighting holiday shoppers and traffic, traveling, and the extra visitors and what do you have? The recipe for a bogged down, sluggish, confused and tuckered out immune system!

It’s no wonder people show more symptoms than usual this time of year!

But here is the good news: You can create HEALTH to create RESISTANCE! What do I mean? Now that you know what factors cause the flu “season”, you know how to combat this! We have to create an environment that is less stressed, less toxic, and better equipped to handle a virus that comes your way.

So, want to attend that holiday party without fear of “catching” something? Here are Dr. Jenn’s tips for a healthier fall and winter season:

1. Get adjusted. Don’t skip your Chiropractic adjustment because you are busy or trying to save up for Christmas gifts! Getting the stress off your nerve system, body and immune system is vital for getting through the year and staying well. You might not be able to stop the stress of hanging out with that crazy relative at Christmas, but you CAN eliminate its effect on your body!

2. Drink water! Half your body weight in ounces, AT LEAST! Read more HERE.

3. Take a Vitamin D supplement. D3 is the best – this is the kind your body produces from the sun. Most people are so deficient, I recommend 5,000 IUs of extra supplementation. Need a good, high quality source of Vitamin D? Stop into our office. We sell a 100-day supply for just $30. Eat foods containing Vitamin D to get a little extra. My favorite is salmon. If it’s a nice day, go for a family walk; at least you will get a bit of sun on your face and possibly hands.

4. Avoid sugar. Everything in moderation. Instead of 3 pieces of pie this Thanksgiving, share a piece with your wife. Instead of a cheesecake bar at your office holiday party, opt for some of the fresh fruit. Instead of M&Ms in your kid’s stocking, give them a fun toy or puzzle. Making a dessert? Leave out 25% of the sugar called for in the recipe: I bet you won’t notice the difference!
