So, as you would expect, I have a great handle on “what” Chiropractic is… Because I’ve been living it, breathing it, studying it, performing it, dreaming about it, seeing its power and LOVING it for 9 years. But this is not the case for everyone. Many people have no idea or knowledge base about Chiropractic. When I ask the public, I get a LOT of different responses – “Yeah, my friend went to a Chiropractor for headaches”, or “Oh, you are a Chiropractor? I have this tight muscle in my back!”, or “Don’t you crack bones or something?” But do people really know everything about Chiropractic?

The answer, sadly, is that most people know NOT NEARLY ENOUGH!

Chiropractic

Out of curiosity, I Googled “What is Chiropractic?” just now to see what came up:

chi·ro·prac·tic
ˈkīrəˌpraktik/
noun
  • a system of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.
This definition isn’t terrible, but it really doesn’t do it justice. My definition would be something more like: “The powerful art of restoring the communication between the brain and the body to optimize function and prevent dis-ease of every cell, organ and tissue in the body.”
You see, Chiropractic is about so much more than just the “treatment of misalignments of joints”. Chiropractic LITERALLY impacts the nervous system. You know – the amazing, powerful and important control system that regulates EVERYTHING in your body? So, while it seems that we may focus our attention on the joints, in fact we are focusing our attention on the nerves and the nerve system that is being protected by those bones and joints. Because when stress is left to wreak its havoc on our bodies, our spines and our nerve system, we cannot function at our best. In fact, if left unattended, our bodies will continue to degenerate, decline, and lessen in vitality over the days, weeks, months and years. Taking the stress (subluxation) off that joint, tissue, and/or nerve allows the body to HEAL.
So, instead of looking at a symptom or disorder like the medical community does, Chiropractic looks at the function of the body. How much better can you function? How much more optimally can you meet the stresses of your day? What percentage of your focus, life, and energy can you bring to each and every day?
The fact is, environmental, physical, chemical, and emotional stresses DO take a toll on our body. And our bodies are pretty awesome – they adapt to those stresses. But eventually our body hits its limit and it cannot adapt any longer. This is why Chiropractic helps people improve their health, function and energy – it takes away the effects of those cumulative stresses. This can be after a symptom occurs, as many people wait to happen…. OR it can be preventative – BEFORE the symptom occurs – the smarter choice.
When people begin to understand Chiropractic, they start to understand the “Chiropractic lifestyle”. It stands to reason that if stress from our daily attitudes, habits, posture, diet, relationships, job, and activities can impact our health negatively, so too can these same factors impact our health POSITIVELY if we make the right choices. One of those positive choices is getting regular checks and tune-ups to your nerve system, when needed. And that is our mission and passion – improving your nerve system!
